How a car's differential gear works

Posted by on Sunday, December 18, 2011, In : Tutorial
A vehicle's wheels rotate at different speeds, mainly when turning corners. The differential is designed to drive a pair of wheels while allowing them to rotate at different speeds. In vehicles without a differential, such as karts, both driving wheels are forced to rotate at the same speed, usually on a common axle driven by a simple chain-drive mechanism. When cornering, the inner wheel needs to travel a shorter distance than the outer wheel, so with no differential, the result is the inner...

Building the Simple Differential Drive

Posted by on Wednesday, March 30, 2011, In : Tutorial

We want to introduce you to a very special device now: the differential gear. You probably know that there's at least one differential gear in every car. What you might not know is why the differential gear is so important.
Let's do an experiment together. Take two wheels from your NXT kit and connect their hubs with the longest axle.

Now put the wheels on your table and push them gently" They run smoothly and advance some feet, going straight. Very straight. Keep the axle in the middle with y...

Computing Gear Ratios

Posted by on Monday, January 24, 2011, In : Tutorial

When building complex robots, one of the common needs is to compute the ratio of gearings in order to exactly tune the interaction of the movable parts of your machine. With all the different gears around and the sheer number of possible combinatioins, this is not always a trivial task.

Yesterday, though, I ran over a most wonderful web page by Sariel, a LEGO® aficionado from Poland well-known for his sophisticated TECHNIC inventions. Amongst other things, the page allows ...

Gears

A complete tutorial on Lego gears, their advantages and disadvantages as well as the basic laws of mechanics that apply to them. Updated on February 19th 2010.

When I describe my constructions or ideas, and when I explain their functionality, I usually assume that readers have the basic understanding of mechanics and of the rules that apply to gears. This assumption, it seems, is sometimes wrong. Even though it may appear frustrating at times, I see no real reason to ignore the people who h...
